I enjoyed Paranormal Activity, but the characters were lacking any depth or likeability. Micah was a dumb, arrogant tosspot and Katie was annoyingly paranoid throughout. There was no sense of humour. I was praying for the psychic guy to come back, as he was the only character who had any sense.

It’s like The Blair Witch again – great premise, great moments / scenes, really frustrating characters.

Still – there were some excellent scenes and the general construct of the film is brilliant. Probably never going to watch it again, though…

Just a note for anyone out there interested in obtaining this – it is supposedly in the public domain and therefore you’ll find free versions on the net and often some of those “50 pack” horror DVDs will have it too, but a lot of these versions will be the “Horror Hotel” print that was sold to the US market and was cut by several minutes (not to mention the quality probably won’t be up to snuff). I can really recommend the uncut version and the package put together by UK label Redemption Films, which not only is a cracking widescreen transfer of the film but it’s loaded with extras. You can get it at any one of these:

Not strictly speaking, no. The term ‘graphic novel’ didn’t come into use until 1976 but there were publications from the turn of the century that can be arguably considered to be the first graphic novels

Thanks for the comment, Stuart, and I’m certainly happy to oblige – rape is one of those subjects that is part and parcel of the horror genre, especially within the exploitation side of things. I don’t have a blanket objection to it being shown on screen so long as there’s some justification for its inclusion and that it’s not there merely through some infantile attempt to shock, or worse some misplaced desire to titillate (which for me, personally, it then crosses a line into a fetishism that should be reserved for specialist porn if fake “rape” is what gets someone off, though that’s a can of worms all of its own and one I’m leaving well alone).

The rape scene in this “Unrated/Director’s Cut” is particularly offensive to me because not only does it casually gloss over it without really showing the horrendous impact on the victim, but it’s there merely to serve as a plot contrivance, a kind of deus ex machina method of facilitating Michael’s escape and is thus entirely arbitrary, pointless and merely to add a little shock value, nothing more, an attitude I find entirely unforgivable and it should never have left the cutting room floor, where it belongs.

Great to see the first TV review and I totally agree with you on this, The X-Files is still one of my favourite telly programmes to this day. I recently blind-bought the box set on DVD not having seen it since I first watched them all that time ago (17 years, really?? DAMN…) and was wondering if I’d be disappointed…not a chance, they still hold up well, especially those first few seasons/series before it dips around the time the first film came out.

Thanks for calling out that vile rape scene. I didn’t see this crap on the big screen and didn’t realize I was
watching a “directors cut”. I couldn’t understand why it had been givn a pass by critics. Of course now I know they never saw it. Really indefensible
and unnecessary scene.

I forgot to mention that underneath the Blu-Ray of this, my friend also had Halloween 2 sitting there… I just about made my way through it (glutton for punishment that I am). I thank you for exposing it for being as craptacular as it is in your review, if I’d had to put my thoughts down in writing I’d have probably spontaneously combusted from sheer apoplectic rage, and I don’t think my dictionary covers primal screams.

What I really hated about this film (from a very long list I have compiled, entitled “Things I Really Hated About This Film”, which is too long to include here) is this:

All the bloody explanations.

Okay, so they’ve gone for the hand held camera route. Only they added in a soundtrack for heightened tension. So, get-out-clause-ahoy, they include a little aside where the character says something like “I’ve added in a little soundtrack for added tension”. Then they use a camera angle from a warehouse CCTV, so they include a little aside where the character is shown editing it in, and explaining “I’ve used a camera angle from the warehouse CCTV”. The bone crushing banality of it all offended me.

That was my biggest problem with the film. That and the plot, characters, acting, dialogue, make up, and direction.
