Dark Skies

If you read the name Scott Stewart in the opening sequence of a film you shouldn’t watch it. I haven’t seen Legion, but I don’t think anyone has ever said anything good about the film. I tried to watch his film Priest, but I had to turn it off after 10 minutes. This guy is lame and has no talent in making a film. So why did I watch Dark Skies? Well I am a nice guy and want to be a filmmaker myself so I should give every other filmmaker a second chance. Also, when I was younger I absolutely loved to hear and read stories about real life alien encounters and abductions. Obviously I also loved to watch any kind of films that contains any sort of extra-terrestrials. And it seemed like there weren’t any kind of these films for a while.

I thought it might be entertaining and a bit scary. After all the film is produced by Blumhouse and they did not disappoint me so far (except with Paranormal Activity 4).

I thought maybe Jason Blum would keep a sharp eye on Stewart’s finger. I don’t think he did and if he did it didn’t change anything. All in all Dark Skies seems like a pre packed microwave meal. Everyone who knows alien stories knows the plot of the film and knows what is going on even before the really stupid characters know it. Yes, the characters act very stupid, especially in the climax.

Films and TV Shows like X-Files, Signs and every other alien abduction film told us everything we need to know about “Greys”, “Draconians” and other alien life forms. This one doesn’t explain anything new, doesn’t invent anything new, so therefore you need imagination. Dark Skies is the alien abduction story everyone knows already.

Because there is no trace of originality in the story one might think a good, talented director can make a good film even with a well-known story. And surely a talented director could do that, but not Scott Stewart. And so the film remains the same old story.

10 or 15 years ago Dark Skies would have been an entertaining film and probably even a success like Signs but today I have problems to say anything positive about the film. There is not even one scene in the film that is scary. I mean we all know how “Greys” look. They aren’t really frightening and so no-one should be scared of them, except you add something new to their appearance. The only scary alien types I have seen in the last couple of years are the “Silence” in Doctor Who. They are an interesting and quite scary variation of “Greys”. But the ones in Dark Skies are just really skinny guys, who lurk in the shadows. Unfortunately there is nothing positive to say about the film. I was disappointed because I expected at least something new, some interesting aspects of alien abduction history or a nice twist, but nothing came. And J.K. Simmons’ small role is a big joke, because he just explains everything the audience should know by then.

Everyone who has seen at least one film of this kind or read a story about it knows what this film is about and also knows how it will end. So if you haven’t you might enjoy the film but please watch some better ones afterwards.
